Spring in Katama - Coming Soon

Thank you for being a member of the Katama Association and welcome to the first edition of Katama Tidings! Many of us have endured this cold New England winter, but we can all look forward to a warm summer on Martha's Vineyard. Here is some important news from Katama!

Katama Meadows Development - The Meetinghouse Way development has come back as the Katama Meadows development. This project, which was rejected by the Martha's Vineyard Commission (MVC), was modified and resubmitted to the Edgartown Planning Board and by law was referred back to the MVC. The development has the potential for up to 100 residences. The Martha's Vineyard Commission will hold a public hearing on MARCH 20 at 6:30 in person at the MVC Office and via ZOOM.

South Beach and Norton Point Report - With thanks to Kara Shemeth, the Town of Edgartown Conservation Assistant, here is a report on South Beach and Norton Point:

• The erosion this year was not catastrophic like last winter.

• The area has seen some erosion, but this time of year it is tricky to judge the extent because it generally builds back in the spring.

• The town is working with the MA DCR which owns South Beach to foster more effective future collaboration.

• The town is working with consultants on grants for FY26 that deal with long term planning.

• Dredge permitting is moving forward to be able to provide sand for future beach replenishment

• The Conservation Department has added new seasonal Conservation Ranger positions this summer to complement the existing Beach Rangers and Lifeguard staff. They will be monitoring protected Coastal Water Birds and providing public education to visitors regarding the different species found on Norton Point.
